A word of caution to the new business owner….

Those starting a new business or even already operating a small business are excited about the potential they can achieve given that their destiny for success is in their own hands. No longer are they limited by the control of a corporate entity. However along with the successes that can come with small business ownership, comes certain perils and pitfalls to be on guard against.

The Dilemma

The small business owner unfortunately swims in a sea of sharks looking to take advantage of them with promises that appear amazing, but usually come with a price that is all too often paid later. Being in the cash register / POS business since 1999 we have seen all sorts of promises, schemes and tricks to lure in small business owners to take advantage of them, and then lock them in.

One sort of deception comes from what we will discuss here is a FREE cash register / POS system with LOW credit card processing rates. Anyone who claims something is free is clearly not being truthful nor transparent. As the adage goes, there is no such thing as a free lunch. While it is true credit card processors will offer a free cash register, there is usually a perpetual monthly fee attached to it or they make it up with either higher processing rates or miscellaneous unnecessary junk/garbage fees attached to the credit card processing. Many processors will hide the markups to cover their cost of the equipment with various fees such as:

  • High monthly service fee
  • High statement fee
  • High PCI compliancy fee
  • Annual fee
  • Some sort of technical jargon fee… again garbage
  • The biggest trap… monthly minimums (if you do not process a minimum determined amount, a substantial penalty is charged to your account)

 
Once the new merchant accepts a contract for the cash register / POS equipment, they are locked in. Usually contracts are for 3 years with VERY high early termination fees. Such contracts are usually accompanied with a service/support fee which usually can be based monthly or yearly. What kind of support can one expect from such a service? For the most part expect to talk to an outsourced firm with hard to understand English being spoken. This is the biggest complaint we receive from so many businesses that are locked into these programs. The support is terrible!

Here is the problem with these credit card processors offering free equipment and promising the moon… They only care about getting your processing! Many processors will tell you whatever it takes to get your business. Once you are locked in, you are easily forgotten. This is sad, but this is the feedback we have received from so many small business owners. The other complaint is that the business owner was offered a great rate, but that rate went up soon thereafter. This is a very unethical but sadly a common practice.

We get approached by many wanting to buy a system from us for a low price and change their processing to our clear and transparent program, but they just cannot exit the contract. Many come to learn too late that if they cancel their contract they are paying an astronomical early termination of contract fee. The other dilemma is if you decide to stop using their processing, but keep the contract open, then the monthly minimum fee kicks in to make up for their lost revenue thus negating the savings you would have with our company. Unfortunately, this is the trap many fall into…
